Ltd companies and long term disability
policies differ, but, often, your physician will be asked provide
information at regular intervals. This may comprise a form that your
doctor will need to complete once each month. This, of course, sounds
simple enough; however many doctors do not like to complete such forms
and will often charge their patients an inordinate fee for the "five
crucial minutes" it takes them to help their disabled patients.
Unfortunately, the same phenomenon is seen in social security
disability cases when treating physicians will sometimes refuse to
provide written statements in support of their patients unless a fee has
been paid.
Why would an ltd carrier require that forms be completed and submitted
each month, particularly in cases where an individual's doctor has
indicated that their prognosis will be unlikely to change? Some have
likened this to harassment of physicians, or "digging" in the hope that a
patient's doctor will, at some point, provide information that paves
the way for denying benefits.
